Recipe story

Making patties of food has this special feel around it. Especially when you’re limiting the amount meat consumption in general, burgers can be one of those meals that a person misses a lot while trying to lead a healthy lifestyle. Even though I don’t consume much meat, and fatty meal in particular, occasionally, I get a can of tuna or two and get creative, Tuna burgers are just what hits the sweet spot when I am looking for a flavorful lunch or dinner that’s super easy and give me the pleasure of eating a few patties between a couple of buns. Generally, these bad boys are one of those comfort foods I turn to when I am looking to indulge in a delicious meal without having to feel guilty about it – the patties themselves are only 305 calories, in TOTAL! I usually eat these with a bowl of salad or some healthy platter of homemade fries to get the whole “burger” feel, but you can make it as healthy as you wish. If you’re into extra strict, these patties will do, without having to use buns – they’re just a little cherry on the top for us burger lovers. Give these protein tuna bombs a try and let me know how they worked out for you!

1 can of tuna 4oz
1/4 cup of sweet peas
1/4 cup of breadcrumbs
1 egg
Desired seasonings
Optional - 1 tbsp of garlic

Step 1 – strain the water/oil from the tuna can and “break” the meat with your fork Step 2 – combine tuna with sweet peas, egg, and breadcrumbs, and season generously (I like to use lemon pepper seasoning, Italian seasoning, and parsley flakes) Step 3 – mix all ingredients thoroughly with a fork and form 2-3 patties (if the mixture is falling apart, gently squeeze out some of the excess liquid from the mixture) Step 4 – use a non-stick cooking spray to grease up the pan and over medium-high heat, cook patties for 3-5 minutes on the first side, and 2-3 minutes on the other side Optional step 5 – serve with hamburger buns and construct like a normal hamburger or serve with a side salad and eat plain – they’re delicious either way
